Dan Brodribb's headLINES appears every Saturday in the Edmonton Journal's ed magazine.

-Well, it's nearly Comedy Idol time, Yuk Yuks annual competition to find the best amateur comedian in the city. The contest will be running through May, so be sure to check the Edmonton Yuk Yuks website for details at www.edmontonyuks.com. There's some very talented people in the city, so come out and be the first on your block to 'discover' them.

-Sunday I had a really good show at the Comic Strip. The headliner, SCOTT HENRY, was kind enough to pass on some words of wisdom, so that's always a thrill. Afterwards, I headed down to Smok'n Joes where I caught up with SEAN BAPTISTE.

-Tuesday at Yuk Yuks MAX MAULT and POWERMANN started talking trash to one another before the show. I did what any good friend would do and egged them both on. There's nothing funnier than two comics trying to verbally out-do one another--especially in a room full of other comics. It was like the kung fu fight between Brandon Lee and Al Leong near the end of 'Rapid Fire.'

-The Extreme Comedy Challenge went well on Wednesday. TOM RUBIN won the day with one of the most horrifying date rape jokes I've ever heard--made even funnier by the fact that he's such a sweet guy in real life. He's also one of the few people I can talk basketball with, and I appreciate that.
